PCT Honors will happen on June 3rd at the Mildred Owen Concert Hall. The amazing program identifies and thanks wonderful local people for their service to our community while serving as a fundraiser for our TV station. For more information on tickets and the program, check out our event page.

Here is a spotlight for some of the honorees we will be celebrating this year.

Karen Ervin

The quintessential public servant - a good listener to both sides of an argument, kind and compassionate – Karen Ervin served one term on the Pacifica School District board and is now serving one term on City Council. It’s her last term.8234068274?profile=original

As a school board member she served on the Strategic Planning Committee and a committee that addresses issues shared by the school districts and city government. She volunteered at two schools – Cabrillo and Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School - and held officer positions on their PTO boards, as well.

She was a member of the city’s Financing City Services Task Force from 2008- 2012. She is a board member for Pacifica School Volunteers and Pacificans Care and a member of AAUW.

As a City Council member, she belonged to the Legislative and Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, served as a liaison to the Beautification Committee, the Economic Development Committee, the Library Liaison Committee and the Pacifica Resource Center.

On the county level, she is a General Assembly delegate for the City and County Association of Governments. She served as an alternate to the county’s Domestic Violence Council. She is currently representing Pacifica with Councilmember Mike O'Neill on the Jobs/Housing Gap Task Force organized and run by the County of San Mateo Supervisors.13043237_1324598277556964_1887796615517214253_n.jpg?oh=d6558304e69234d85db24bf02a7047d9&oe=57E02047

The focus of her work on City Council the last four years has been getting Pacifica to a fiscally sustainable condition. She was also deeply concerned with Pacifica’s quality of life and the welfare of the citizens. Ervin said affordability concerns and environmental concerns are issues most effectively addressed if the community works together.

Ervin worked as a senior research associate for many years at Stanford University and Genentech and today is a project manager in Research at Genentech.

She is married to Mike Ervin and they have two children.

Cara Schmaljohn

Cara Schmaljohn has been a strong voice and friendly face of care for senior citizens on the Half Moon Bay Coastside for nearly three decades. Her organization, Senior Coastsiders, began as a small volunteer effort working to meet needs of the elder population of the community. At first, the number of people involved, the facilities needed, and the services provided were quite small. Over its years, the Senior Coastsiders program gained support and strength by consistently delivering a growing list of services.8234067701?profile=original

On the Coastside, the organized efforts for senior citizens started in the 1970s. Senior Coastsiders became a recognized name in 1977, working as part of a group of several social services. In 1988, Schmaljohn joined Senior Coastsiders as its executive director. It incorporated as a separate non-profit in 1990. Since then, it has continued to grow. The most conspicuous of all its changes occurred recently, when construction was finished on its new facilities space. Now they have a banquet hall, numerous activities rooms and administrative space. Its new space is at the south end of Main Street, Half Moon Bay.

The larger area brings flexibility and the ability to collaborate in a host of ways with other parts of the elder care programs on the Coastside. As well, Senior Coastsiders can share space for special events with other organizations and non-profits.

Of the services to elders, the most visible is their meals program Last year, it provided 18,000 low cost meals for seniors and disabled adults. They also collaborate with other groups in their facility for another 15,000 plus meals per year, plus they provide transportation to and from the meals, and coordinate Meals on Wheels. They offer a host of classes, special presentations, and music, exercise and more. All these to sustain the body while providing all-important social touches. Now, the Senior Coastsiders facilitate home repairs for local, underserved elders.53b451ab4a451.image.jpg?resize=540%2C371

Schmaljohn came to the Coastside from her hometown in Colorado by way of Alaska. In Colorado she grew up close to an elder care home. There, she feels she first engrained her empathy for the aging generation. She and her sisters experienced the needs and benefits of helping. Her path to Senior Coastsiders included multiple educational degrees, a period of time supervising felons as a probation officer in Alaska, all aimed at eventual goal of eventual service within the non-profit world.

Schmaljohn is usually found in the company of her dogs – in the office, and on the trails and bluffs overlooking the natural wonder of the Coastside. She is celebrated for being at the hub of services, volunteers, elders, and other community service groups. But she feels her most important personal role is to be sure the community knows where to find guidance when aging difficulties begin to arise.

Here is a spotlight for some of the honorees we will be celebrating this year.

Charlie Hilder

Charlie Hilder volunteers to coach Junior Olympics, other sports and martial arts in local schools. He also has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time to save the lives of accident victims.8234063088?profile=original

A contractor by trade and co-owner of Baby Face Boxing, he built the boxing gym for youth and encourages them to use it whether or not they can afford it.

He set up a portable boxing ring at Terra Nova High School for the annual car show, which benefits the industrial arts. Without that fundraiser, the industrial arts program would fall far short of its budget due to a decrease of education funding. He and the other boxing coaches volunteer all their time and offer a free lesson and sparing.

For the last 8 years, Hilder has been the head coach for Vallemar School’s Junior Olympics. He teaches them how to face scary situations, learn team comradeship, school pride and sportsmanship. He teaches the older kids to take on a coaching role of their own.

When he envisioned a safer crosswalk in front of Vallemar School, he volunteered to do the work himself. When not managing the crosswalk at morning drop off and afternoon pick up, he volunteered wherever he could to help out during lunch and recess.

He coached numerous 8-14 year old soccer teams, as well.

“Here we go again,” he said to himself one rainy, stormy December morning near Mazzetti’s Bakery. Romeo Guerrero, a college student on his way to San Francisco, in a solo accident, wedged his vehicle on the guardrail of the freeway and was trapped behind the wheel. Hilder moved him, freeing him from what doctors later said was a certain punctured lung. Guerrero suffered many broken bones and thought he would never walk again. Hilder visited him often and tried to keep him thinking positive thoughts. It worked. Guerrero made a complete recovery.56df1509d2478.image.jpg?resize=540%2C360

He was the first person on the scene when a woman was hit by a truck. He tried to help her and chased the man who was trying to flee. In an act of pure adrenaline, he picked a truck up off a child’s head. He tried to release the seatbelt on someone whose car had flipped and was filling up with smoke. A pregnant woman had a seizure while driving with her children in the back seat. She hit a tree. Hilder released the kids from the car seat and called her husband, then freed her from the car.

He comes from an artistic and storytelling family. His dad, who died when Hilder was only nine years old, was an opera singer and music teacher. He inspired Hilder to work with children. His mom won an Academy Award for documentary filmmaking, “In the Shadow of the Stars,” about the San Francisco Opera chorus.

Susan Hsu

8234063661?profile=originalSusan Hsu, an optometrist who runs her own business, is a community volunteer who started making a difference when her sons were in preschool. She started to raise money for various school causes. That determination carried over to Cabrillo School Child Care where she helped raise money for the special events and for the city’s Parks Beaches and Recreation Department, the outfit that runs the child care center.

As a Cabrillo School volunteer, her focus divided between money and time. She took on whatever tasks the classroom teachers needed, often taking supplies home to be cut up in the evening. She continued to raise money for Cabrillo and soon added Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School to her list. She helped out at many IBL events. When her boys attended high school, she became a valued volunteer at Oceana High School. She was a PTO officer for seven years and always volunteered at events and fundraisers, including helping out in the fireworks booth. Her goal was to reach $9,000 in funds raised in E-script. She made it.DSC_0780.jpg

With her sons in college, she has more time to volunteer for community activities, such as those run by the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, where she had been a past board member. She volunteers with Pacifica School Volunteers. She joined Lions Club and Mitzpah. She helps plan events or lends a hand when needed, such as running the hot dog stand at the Junior Olympics for the Lions Club. Through those organizations, she raised money for high school scholarships and to help those in need through the Pacifica Resource Center. She is such an organized backpack packer for school supplies at the Resource Center, her team received special notice from executive director Anita Rees. The Lions Club helped put books in the hands of students and donated to the many interesting projects of the Pacifica Historical Society, of which Hsu is a member.

Here is a spotlight for some of the honorees we will be celebrating this year.

Rita Mancera

Rita Mancera Hernandez was born in Mexico City and grew up in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. She comes from a small family that values education, hard work and family time. Her experience with non-profit organizations goes back all the way to her teen years.

8234068487?profile=originalRita’s previous work with the YMCA of Mexico and the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs gave her a foundation for understanding the many challenges and strengths of North, Central and South America, an introduction to poverty, inequality and immigration, and a taste for the results of collaboration among agencies.

However, it has been her ten years of living in Pescadero and her relationships with local immigrant friends and neighbors (as well as with community leaders and mentors) that opened her eyes to a different implication of immigration. She has seen poverty right next door to wealth, injustice in labor practices and the challenges and opportunities of living in an isolated rural community such as the South Coast.

Rita joined Puente in 2006 with responsibilities for home visiting families with children ages 0-5 to talk with parents about early childhood development. Later she became Puente’s Community Builder with the primary goal to create programs that would introduce the Latino and the Anglo community to each other. For four years she served as Puente’s Program Director overseeing a diversity of programs from immigration to physical activity to education and youth leadership. She is currently Puente’s Deputy Executive Director where she is responsible for integrating all aspects of Puente’s programs and activities, including grant writing, fundraising and budgeting.kerry-and-rita-870x444.jpg

Rita’s goals for the community are to continue closing the gap in education for children, youth and adults, increasing services so youth can succeed academically and personally in the 21th century, expanding the development of local leadership and supporting local individuals and families to move out and stay out of poverty.

Rita lives in Pescadero with her husband Jim and son William.

Steve Brown

Steve Brown has enjoyed a career in media, film production and the music industry for over 50 years. Before even graduating from high school, he became a production assistant for broadcasting legend Don Sherwood in 1961 at KSFO.

8234069266?profile=originalHis military career included two tours in VietNam with the Navy Operations film crew, supplying music to ships in the Pacific Fleet, and concurrently establishing San Diego's first album-oriented rock station KPRI FM as "O.B. Jetty" in 1968.

Rock and roll brought him back to the Bay Area in 1969 as a DJ at KSJO-FM in San Jose, followed by a stint as the head album buyer for the successful Record Factory chain.

Brown worked for the iconic rock band The Grateful Dead and served as production and post production assistant for 1974's The Grateful Dead Movie. He worked on numerous world tours for both The Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band.

His two stints at Pacifica Community Television have been acclaimed and prolific. During the 80s, he served as Production Manager, overseeing 15 hours a week of local programs. Since 2004, he has co-produced and worked on varied programs such as Pacifica Currents, Footprints of Pacifica, Laugh Locally, Wavelength, The Bruce Latimer Show, the annual Pacifica Garden Tour and Earth Day; and the Soundwaves Xmas fundraiser specials.8234069099?profile=original

Brown produced the documentary Song of Viet Nam, the Bonnie and Clyde drama The Barrow Gang, as well as several music videos, documentaries, and live performances. He has presented three annual "Steve's Flashback Jam" events, showcasing 40+ years of personally-filmed live performances and interviews.

He also curated the 2015 "History of Surfing in Pacifica" exhibit at the Pacifica Historical Society's Coastside Museum, and recently shot a documentary on the 72-foot mural on Crespi Drive and even did some of the painting.

Here is a spotlight for some of the honorees we will be celebrating this year.

Paul and Amy Kukielka

Paul and Amy Kukielka, owners of both Chit Chat Cafes, are welcoming people, making the cafes great places to relax. Serving breakfast and lunch items, Chit Chat is a great place to meet friends or enjoy a quiet meal. Both locations overlook the water, and whale watching is a popular past time. 8234062084?profile=original

The Chit Chat Manor location offers beer and wine, a choice for some when the bands play over the weekends. Musicians of all genres love the Chit Chat. It’s a great place to catch the local bands and bands that spontaneously form because certain talented people happen to be in the audience.

Both locations are usually open Thanksgiving and Christmas because some customers really enjoy having a comfortable place to go to on a holiday.

The Chit Chat Pier location sits on one of the only open-ocean fishing piers in the state and draws people from all over the Bay Area and visitors from other countries. Chit Chat at the Pier happens to be the cafe where people gather to watch the whales, fish, or walk while enjoying a grilled-to-order burger or hot dog on weekends. chit-chat-cafe-at-the.jpg

The Kukielkas have owned the Chit Chat on Manor Drive since 2003. Two years later they picked up the second Chit Chat at the Pacifica Pier. They volunteer to provide all the refreshments for the annual American Legion event when veterans go fishing at the pier. They provided live entertainment and whatever else was needed to support the now- defunct POPS (Preserve our Pier). They are involved with the Toys for Tots drive every year and fill the café with gifts for children. The many musicians who love to play at the Chit Chat tell their guests to bring toys. They've donated water and snacks for the PARCA bike ride and are avid supporters of most school raffles and the PCT telethon, donating gift certificates for each one. They displayed the quilt to be donated to raise money for the Terra Nova music department and supplies for the Terra Nova wrestling team, as well. In the past, the Kukielkas helped the Pacifica Beach Coalition clean up on Earth Day. They donated to help raise funds to build the Pacifica dog park. Once it was open, they barbequed lunch items at the milestone celebrations.

Visit the Chit Chat Cafe at  5 W Manor Dr in Pacifica!

Charise McHugh

Charise McHugh has been the leader of the Half Moon Bay Chamber of Commerce for 20 years. When she entered the chamber community, she arrived with a burst of excitement and enthusiasm. That energy level has done nothing but accelerate. She will be found exploring, developing, and promoting many movements for business, government, and community service non-profits.

8234062465?profile=originalBefore working with the chamber, McHugh headed a marketing promotions company in San Francisco, “Promotions with Pizzazz.” She brought her promotional flair – and a remarkable management skill - when she came to the Chamber of Commerce. The chamber brilliantly does the normal chamber activities - the tourist information, directories, ribbon cuttings and web presence. Separately, McHugh heads up the HMB Hotel Business Improvement District (BID). It is the BID that does the public relations that globally publicizes the HMB Coastside.

McHugh is always found working and contributing ideas to help make community events successful. Among those are “The Night of Lights,” “Rock the Block,” and “Passeggiata,” the downtown stroll. For a suburban community like this one, which is right next to major cities, is a special event - Farm Day – the day that helps keep the still vibrant rural spirit of the Coastside alive.

During her two decades with the chamber, McHugh is active in the Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE). While she was busy doubling the number of members within the local chamber (and tripling its budget), she has served on the WACE Board of Directors, and been recognized with their prestigious “Hammond Award.”  Chaise_0.jpg?itok=Xaw_W07Z

The social programs - apart from the chamber - that McHugh helped start that will leave the greatest impact. She helped bring the SamTrans bus shuttle service along the coast. Locals without cars can now easily move around the Coastside for work and shopping and errands. She initiated and helped manage the Coastside Medical Center – for years, delivering health care to insured under-insured, and uninsured. Now, she is instrumental in coordinating the diverse activist groups necessary in designing and driving a nationally recognized local disaster relief plan. McHugh says she works hard for the Coastside because she simply loves working with people and solving problems.

She and her husband, Jack McHugh, settled together in Half Moon Bay in the early 1980s and raised their three children and now have six grandchildren.

Paws for Tales in Half Moon Bay!

8234060678?profile=original8234060097?profile=originalChildren can improve their reading skills by reading to a trained therapy dog. Do you know a reluctant reader? Studies show children who are reluctant to read in front of peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals to be judgmental; mere animal presence helps them become more confident readers. Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers are from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA’s Paws for Tales program.

Please note that the Humane Society requires a signed release form for each time a child reads. Please make sure Mom or Dad accompany the child.

8234075456?profile=originalPacific Coast TV highlights different events and organizations located in the coast side in order to bring awareness to local issues and ideas.

The Coastside Youth Council (CYC), a program through the Youth Leadership Institute, is a group of youth leaders in Half Moon Bay between the ages of 15-20 who organize community activities for other youth.

One of their goals is to prevent underage drinking and to reduce the messages of alcohol in the Coastside area. They've researched local convenience stores in the area as well as the famous HMB Pumpkin Festival to bring awareness to underage drinking as well as alcoholism in their community.  They also advocate for smoke free communities, especially in housing for low income families.

They give students opportunities to become leaders in their community and gain experience that will help them apply to college and in all their future endeavors.

For youth interested in joining, they meet

every Friday from 4-6pm at the

Ted Adcock Community Center, 535 Kelly Avenue Half Moon Bay, CA 94019.

They also have paid internship opportunities. Please contact Montzerrat Garcia at mbedolla@yli.org or (714) 579-9070 for more information.

Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) has been an innovative leader in the field of youth development for over 20 years, working in many capacities—from advocating for national policy change, to organizing on a community level. YLI has served San Mateo County in partnership with foundations, community organizations, and schools with a focus in building strong and healthy communities.
