Gourds galore!

It was a smashing 'gourd' time at the 45th annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival this past weekend. Once again Pacific Coast TV was on the scene to capture and broadcast all of the pumped-up pumpkin action!8234066281?profile=original

It's estimated that this year's festival was attended by over 100,000 pumpkin enthusiasts, both local and from afar. Since its introduction in 1970, the festival has grown from what was once a hometown homage to the indigenous fruit, to what has blossomed into a full-blown, highly anticipated pumpkin palooza.

If you're Looking for all-things pumpkin, HMB Pumpkin Festival is definitely the place to peruse.

Every square inch of Historic Main Street was populated with plenty of pumpkin paraphernalia.

Aside from being able to pick the perfect pumpkin from Half Moon Bay's hearty harvest, highlights from the festival included: Live music, DIY art stations, an expert pumpkin carving exhibition, pie eating contest, a haunted barn and The Great Pumpkin Parade. 8234066476?profile=original

A plethora of vendors were present peddling their pumpkin products and an array of other

interesting items.

8234067070?profile=original

Hats seem to be tops at HMB Art and Pumpkin Festival and there was no shortage of people sporting green stemmed orange berets. If being a pumpkin-head is not exactly your thing you could opt to purchase other Halloween inspired head gear. There were handmade witch hat and skull headbands, a plenty, in addition to cute little cat ears running around everywhere.

8234067273?profile=original

I myself opted to buy a spider inspired headpiece and I have to say it was quite a hit!

8234067464?profile=originalOnce I had appropriately themed head gear it was time to continue my quest for, you guessed it, a bag to hold all of the goodies I was sure to collect over the two-day fest. Luckily, presenting sponsor, Safeway saved the day with their glow-in-the-dark, trick or treat bag giveaway.

The lines were long but well worth the wait. And if you took a picture in their photo booth and posted to either Instagram of Facebook using the hashtag #SafewayHMBPumpkin you were automatically entered to win a $25 Safeway gift card.

After I got my hat and my bag, it was time to focus on food.

Naturally, I had to try the pumpkin mac & cheese being sold by Mariner's Church Coastside. It was a creamy mashup of savory cheese and pumpkin spices topped with roasted pumpkin seeds. Yum!

 8234067859?profile=original

To wash it down, I headed over to the Half Moon Bay Winery booth to treat myself to a pumpkin harvest ale. Although it was my first trip to that vendor, over the duration of the weekend I must admit that it was not my last.

8234067687?profile=original

I basically ate my way through the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, much in the same way, Templeton the Rat, did during his Schmorgasboard-orgasboard at the fair in the movie Charlotte's Web.

I enjoyed a pumpkin pretzel with pumpkin sweet sauce, a chicken/pumpkin sausage, a different pumpkin ale from ‎Traveler Beer Company, a delicious roasted pumpkin chicken chili from Sonoma-based Rocky and Rosie Chicken and of course pumpkin pie.

8234068079?profile=original

I wanted so badly to try the pumpkin ice cream, but miserably failed to save any space. Oh well, at least I have something to look forward to at next year's Half Moon Bay Art &Pumpkin Festival. And on behalf of Pacific Coast Television, I hope to see you there!

World War II At Home with Naomi Patridge

8234062898?profile=original

The Half Moon Bay History Association is dedicated to recording all parts of local history, even the parts that might not want to be remembered. The History Association held an event remembering the Japanese Americans being sent to internment camps during World War II. This event included a 2015 PCT honoree Naomi Partridge, a Japanese American who was relocated to an internment camp in Topaz, Utah, along with other Japanese Americans living in the coast side towns, including Half Moon Bay and Pescadero.

Some of the experiences Partridge explained included going to the Tanforan racetrack for questioning, living through terrible conditions at the internment camps, due to the  government's lack of health and safety, and witnessing a little girl being murdered during the camp. Despite of the rough conditions in the camp, the Japanese Americans still had some form of government in each of their barracks to deal with issues, as well as having a high school and a nursery.

Overall, Partridge said no one during that time has ever suffered more than the Japanese Americans, who lost their jobs, homes, and identity. When asked if something like this would ever happen again, she thinks so based on that one can access the media anywhere, and the media is constantly propagating fear into people. Partridge said "The only way to prevent another race falling victim to the government, is to understand that fear is only a concept and must not take over one's mind".

PCT will be playing this special on October 23 at 6 PM on Comcast Ch 26/27 Coastside.

Adrift in Pacifica Fog Fest

Hosted annually in Pacifica, California, Fog Fest 2015 marked 30 years of celebrating the Coastside community! Fog Fest takes place the last full weekend in September, a time when we bid a fond farewell to summer and extend a hearty hello to the season of autumn. 8234073062?profile=original

What better way to commemorate the seasonal transition than with one big party with the picturesque backdrops and perfect climates of Pacifica.

Fog Fest offers something for absolutely everyone!

If you have a thing for unique arts and crafts, you're in luck because Fog Fest always has an ample supply of regional vendors selling their artisan wares. Come prepared to shop ‘til you drop. The first thing I purchased was a one-of-a-kind custom tote bag from, Accessories With Love. This was of course, was my most important purchase because I knew I would need it to hold all the goodies I would accumulate over the next two days.8234073264?profile=original

And accumulate goodies, I did indeed. In fact, I could have used two custom totes by the time it was all said and done. In addition to custom totes festival goes could purchase custom made clothing, jewelry, hats, paintings, surfboards and even a mini ocean ecosystem. That's just quick snapshot of available items.

8234073291?profile=original

One of my favorite Fog Fest vendors is, We Have a Cap for That. They specialize in making the most darling pendants from retro bottle caps. How cute is that?

8234073090?profile=original

This year, the one I scored pictures the Eiffel Tower encased in a recycled Dr. Wells Strawberry Soda bottle cap. I've worn it every day since I got it and it's been a great little conversation piece.

While you're busy shopping you can also bop along to the live sounds coming from three music stages. South Stage, sponsored by Recology of the Coast is live-streamed through the duration of the festival on PCT channel 26. Featuring a mashup of music that includes Funk Soul, Country, Rock, Reggae

and more. Acts performing on the Recology Stage included California Cowboys, Bar Fight, Neon Velvet and Bay Area favorites Bayonics.

8234073469?profile=original

And let's not forget about the food at Fog Fest. Festival goers are encouraged to enjoy cuisine representing every corner from across the globe. It was a difficult decision but I finally settled on the crawfish etouffee and shrimp po’boy from New Orleans Catering and it did not disappoint. Other available entrees included: BBQ oysters from Aroma Concessions, Philly cheesesteak from Pedemonte & Co, corn on the cob from California Corn Roast and we cannot forget the incredible crab fries and gyros from Gourmet Faire.

8234072469?profile=original

You'll most likely need something to wash all that yummy down your tummy and once again, Fog Fest has got you completely covered. They have a signature drink called the Fog Cutter but proceed with caution cause this libation packs quite the upper cut. It's a delightful array of colorfully hued spirits that can be purchased in a souvenir keepsake Fog Fest glass.

For an additional fee you can get any of your choice beverages in a keepsake beer tumbler, wine glass or shot glass.

8234073699?profile=original

Even sports enthusiast could get in on the action at this year's Fog Fest. The Super Bowl 50 Host Committee selected Fog Fest to display an impressive exhibit of the five SF 49ers and three Oakland Raiders Super Bowl trophies.

I can't wait to see what they have in store for next year's Fog Fest festivities. The 30 year anniversary will definitely be a tough fest to follow.

Experience as a Production Intern at PCT

8234058460?profile=original

Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamed of working behind the scenes on television shows and movies. During my senior year of high school, I decided to take a film class at night to learn more about the career I've been interested in for a while. While walking through the hallway one day before class, I noticed a bright green flyer reading "TV Production Interns Wanted". I immediately took a photo of the flyer and called to set up an interview the next day.

8234058281?profile=original

Long story short, I got the internship! I started working twice a week at PCT and learning new skills taught by Jason Francisco, the operations manager. I learned how to properly operate a camera, during a live shoot and a taped shoot. I brushed up on my Photoshop and Final Cut pro skills since I had access to the programs on my free time when I wasn't working. I was also able to produce my own show for my Senior Capstone project with the other interns.

8234058890?profile=original

Overall, I truly enjoyed my semester internship with PCT. I learned to apply the terms that I had to study for my Film Study and Appreciation class to practice and it has made my film classes at College of San Mateo much easier. It solidified my dream of working in the film industry and has given me experience for when I transfer to a film school in Los Angeles. Most importantly, I've gained a newfound appreciation for the city of Pacifica. I never knew how important PEG channels were to a community and it make happy to be a part of something that brings a town together in an age were most people don't even know their neighbors. I've made new friends with the other interns and people of Pacifica.

Eventually in the fall, I started working at PCT as the programming coordinator and it's taught me even more than what I learned as an intern. PCT is a great stepping stone for anyone who's looking to get into the industry and for me, it even gave me a job in a field I love. I'm forever grateful to PCT and the city of Pacifica and look forward to continue my work in television.

An Inside Look at Volunteering for Fog Fest

8234053300?profile=originalPacific Coast Television's very own intern, Justin Phu, sat down with James Parsons to talk about what it's like at Fog Fest.

8234053487?profile=originalJustin Phu: How long have you been volunteering with PCT for Fog Fest?

James Parsons: I've been volunteering at the Fog Fest for 9 years.

Justin Phu: What's your favorite part about Fog Fest?

James Parsons: There's always a lot of entertainment, like all the bands playing, and people watching can be fun as well.

Justin Phu: What is the best part of volunteering for PCT during Fog Fest?

James Parsons: Meeting the entertainers, especially at the South Side since it's easier to talk to them before they go on stage.

Justin Phu: What advice would you give someone volunteering for Fog Fest for the first time?

James Parsons: Always ask Jason or Marty [the supervisors] on what to do and tell them how long you want to volunteer for.

Justin Phu: Which booth do you recommend checking out?

James Parsons: The Sandpit.

Justin Phu: Where would you find more information at Fog Fest?

James Parsons: At the Southside of the festival where the bands are playing has a lot of information.

Justin Phu: Why should people go to Fog Fest?

James Parsons: It started out as "making fun of our fog" but they pick this particular weekend since it's less likely to be foggy so it's great weather for a festival. Artists from as far as LA would come to show their works. It's a nice atmosphere. I recommend you bring cash only, there might not be very many ATMs in the area.

Fog Fest is September 26-27 from 10 AM- 5 PM both days.

If you're interested in volunteering along side James, give us at call at (650)355-8001. Let us know what times you're available and we can get you on your way.

Training for Fog Fest is at the end of September, check out our production calendar for exact dates and times.

Half Moon Bay Walking Tour!

8234056300?profile=original

The Half Moon Bay Walking Tour Comes to PCT!

By Justin Phu

Out of all the cities and towns in the coastside, Half Moon Bay has an historic past. Being the first settlement of what is now San Mateo County back in the 1840's, the land grants of the Half Moon Bay area were given to the early Mexican settlers. Soon after, the Gold Rush in 1849 brought in people of various cultures to California and to Half Moon Bay, which helped shaped its colorful and unique history. In addition, many events including the 1906 earthquake left an impact on Half Moon Bay.

8234056863?profile=originalThe infamous earthquake of 1906 affected many places in the Bay Area, and Half Moon Bay was no exception. Both the Mexican adobes and early American brick buildings in the area were destroyed, but the original wooden structures, dating back in the late 1800s, survived the earthquake and can still be seen by the public today. Overall, this is just one of the main events in Half Moon Bay’s historic past.

8234056893?profile=original

In addition to the 1906 earthquake, another event that would affect Half Moon Bay was the Prohibition Era (1920-33). Although production and sales of alcohol was ban during this period, that did not stop bootleggers from smuggling in illegal liquor to Half Moon Bay. In fact, the hidden coves and the fog in the Half Moon Bay area were great advantages for both the local and Canadian bootleggers. The Prohibition Era, along with the 1906 earthquake are just little snippets of the town’s colorful history and there is so much more to it.

Want to know more? Watch David Cresson, the President of the Half Moon Bay History Association, as he leads a tour through downtown Half Moon Bay and explains the town’s historic past.

It will premiere on Sunday, August 13 and repeats every Saturday at 7pm.

8234057255?profile=original

If interested, you can join the next tour by calling (650)726-4468. The goals of the Half Moon Bay History Association are to preserve, educate, and celebrate the Coastside Community’s past.

The latest episode of Footprints of Pacifica is finally here!

As up and coming small town, Pacifica, just 6 years old, had an idea to reinvent the way Santa would visit the children that holiday season. Santa would fly down to see the kids one windy day in December, to bring Christmas joy and help promote the growing town of Pacifica. However, that very wind would be the one of the twists of fate that kept the Pacifica on its toes as Santa blew away into the ocean and in the path of an unsuspecting surfer named Guy Giedzinski.

Watch Deidra Kennedy, a member of the Pacifica Historical Society, interview Guy Giedzinski about his thrilling rescue in 1963. He'll reveal all the details about the rescue and how it still impacts him to this day.

Having a loving and supportive environment forms the foundation of a strong community. It was from these ideals, that the Big Wave project came into fruition. Steve and Jamie Barber and Jeff and Valerie Peck decided to accomplish two things: to provide a place in which individuals with developmental disabilities could reach their full potential and to provide local Coast side businesses with the commercial space to thrive and grow.

The Big Wave Project has been tabled a few times over the years, due to disagreements over details in the plan. Like every proposal, there are pros and cons to the community it's enforced in. The San Mateo County Planning Commission discussed the future of this project on 1/14/15. Don’t worry if you missed it because we have you covered.  The whole meeting will be broadcasted here on Pacific Coast Television!

It is a natural desire for every human being to feel included. Being engulfed in a loving and supportive environment can bring people to heights they did not feel they could reach before.
The Big Wave Project has been tabled a few times over the years, but thankfully is back on the agenda. The San Mateo County Planning Commission will be discussing the future of this project on 1/14/15. Don’t worry if you can’t make it. The whole meeting will be broadcasted here on Pacific Coast Television Friday 1/16 at 10 am and Sunday 1/18 at 12 pm.

Thanks to our friends!

BB01JackieSpeier

The New Year is an excellent time to be grateful. One of the best reasons we have to be grateful at PCT is our friends! Over the past year we've cultivated many relationships both new and old!

We wish to say a sincere thanks to all of these friends. This year several friends stepped up and really came through in a big way. Whether it was business sponsors like Terry's Hair Factory, board members like Jo-Lynn Ruedas or political friends like Mike O'Neill, our friends really came through. We also wish to acknowledge Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Senator Jerry Hill and Assembleyman Kevin Mullin, all of whom came through for us as well.

Many partners, sponsors and community members joined in including the city of Half Moon Bay and other friends. It truly takes a village to make a community TV station. We are very grateful for the contributions of so many. If I failed to mention you by name please be aware that there are so many who I did not mention that also deserve our thanks. All we can say is thank you to everyone for making 2014 a banner year. We look forward to seeing you in 2015. Together, we will accomplish incredible things!
