Value of PCT

13761613283?profile=original

The following was written by Michael Letang a student at SFSU who is also currently living in Oakland. PCT holds such an importance for Michael to gain experience and knowledge that he makes a long commute 2 times a week while being remote the other days!

If it had been for Pacific Coast TV taking a chance on me I would still be stuck in a warehouse that neighbors a junkyard. So becoming a member of Pacific Coast TV has been everything I had hoped it would be. As a new intern at Pacific Coast TV, I have been warmly welcomed as a member of the coast side community. Pacific Coast TV has offered me the opportunity to put into the world what I want to see in it. By supporting Pacific Coast TV, you are also supporting your local coastside community. Pacific Co

ast TV supports local businesses and non-profits by filming community events and offering advertising on our channel and website to their direct audience.

Funding for Pacific Coast TV is not ‘non-essential’. Because if you took away PEG stations, like Pacific Coast TV, you would be taking away people’s freedom of speech as well. Pacific Coast TV is not the only PEG station, it is however a historical one. At a PEG station in Kauai, they feature cooking shows, important hearings and information for people,

and it is all produced by people in the local community.

If you take away PEG stations, like Pacific Coast TV,  you take away workshops that train people in real-life production skills that without it would not be able to get a job and provide. You would be taking away Pacific Coast TV Programs like The Bruce Latimer Show and Spotlight, made by people and business owners in your community who you may even know personally. You would be taking the opportunity away from the community to volunteer at events like Pelican Fest, Fog Fest and Pumpkin Fest, events that build stronger relationships within the community. I am convinced that taking away Pacific Coast TV is really taking something significant away from not only the community but from you and I as well.

Sincerely,

Michael Letang

Esplanade Beach Clean Up

13761608053?profile=originalMeet at the top of the stairs on Esplanade Avenue next to Oceanaire Apartments (100 Esplanade Ave, Pacifica, CA).

Cleanup Areas: We’ll focus on the bluffs, the Coastal Trail parklet to the south,  and the nearby streets, where lots of litter and debris collect before the wind blows it into the ocean. Our goal is to pick it up before that happens! When the trail down to the beach is accessible, we will cover as much of the beach as the tides allow.

Supplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their buckets and reusable gloves. Extra gloves and buckets for this site cleanup will be provided while supplies last. Because we are never sure of the weather,  bring extra layers, a hat, sunblock, water, and snacks.

Litter:  Bottles, cans, wrappers, packing straps, cigarette butts, and plenty of debris can be found on Manor and Esplanade Streets above the bluff as well as on the bluff.  Esplanade Beach, when accessible, receives a lot of styrofoam and plastic (huge chunks to micro size) from the ocean. Improperly disposed litter includes bottles, candy wrappers, and dog waste bags.

Be there EVERY 3rd Saturday of the month!

HELP PCT: WRITE TO THE PUC

SUPPORT COMMUNITY MEDIA!!

WHAT:

OFIRST TIME in 15 years by the California Public Utilities Commission (which regulates cable)  is listening to the COMPLAINTS of CABLE CUSTOMERS. Many of YOU CALLED IN by phone to give your FEEDBACK!

NOW:

Now we're asking our community to write to the commission to demand that the Nation's oldest Community Media Center be seen on the HD spectrum of cable!

WHY:

Currently, your Community Media TV (AKA P.E.G. TV channel) is NOT being seen on the HD tier of Cable! Even worse, Cable companies like COMCAST and AT&T make it HARD to even FIND the P.E.G. channels. (P.E.G. stands for Public, Education, and Government TV).

WHAT TO SAY:

All you have to do is write a short NOTE to the P.U.C. and say the following:

  • PEG channels MUST be supported financially. Every Cable Company is charged PEG fees for the purpose of supporting PEG channel activity. It is VITAL that these funds are used for the purpose they were intended, to support PEG channel activities. They must go to these uses and not be redirected by Cable companies, cities, or any other entities.
  • My local Community Channel is Pacific Coast TV (PCT)  is currently being displayed on cable via outdated quality, even though PCT delivers our programming in high definition resolution.
  • This makes it HARD to find my local TV channel because both our local providers (ATT and Comcast) effectively hide our local channel from view.
  • When I can find the channel, the image is COMPLETELY SUBSTANDARD.
  • According to state law, community PEG channels are required to be delivered to subscribers in the same format as every other station. A Cable company should not downgrade the channel signal quality of community channels.

HOW TO WRITE IN:

Go to www.cpuc.ca.gov/docket and enter R.23-04-006 in the "Proceeding Number Search" field. Once you find it, click on the public comment tab to enter your thoughts about the importance of getting PCT onto HD!

NOTE:

  • PEG channels like PCT play a crucial role in government transparency efforts by covering local government meetings and proceedings. They are vital sources of local news and civic engagement and played a critical role in the COVID pandemic by delivering hyper-local government, public health, public safety and educational information.
  • The deliberately substandard treatment of PEG channels represents serious harm to California customers. The Commission should address it as part of the customer service requirements it adopts.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT of PCT, YOUR COMMUNITY MEDIA VOICE!

National Night Out

13761612874?profile=original

Porches and police cars alike don their lights as the city of Pacifica prepares for its annual National Night Out, an event promoting safety and community. The event aims to connect local law enforcement with community members, so don’t be alarmed if you see red and blue lights outside your house on Aug.

Pacifica law enforcement invites locals to open their doors between 6:30 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 1 to participate in a citywide block party of sorts, dedicated to uniting neighborhoods with local police departments.

The event will be coordinated by the police department and based on prior registration, which ends July 28. This registration will ensure that all neighborhoods and households are visited throughout the evening. Many communities hold their National Night Out at a central location, but Pacifica will be taking a different approach this year.

The city of Pacifica will not hold an event downtown, but will instead have members of the local police department visit each neighborhood registered for the event. Along with these visits are small presentations regarding issues that community members themselves bring forward prior to the event.

This personalized strategy has yielded the best results for the city of Pacifica, and has kept National Night Out around year after year. The goal of this event is to deepen the bonds between community members in an effort to deter crime, and over National Night Out’s run in the Pacifica community ties have strengthened.
