Pacifica City Council Approves Funding for Fairmont Park Restrooms and Taranova Tennis Court Lights

The Pacifica City Council discussed several budget priorities during its June 22nd meeting, including replacing the lights at the Taranova High School tennis courts and funding restrooms at Fairmont Park.

During public comment, resident Joy Hitsman urged the council to replace the aging tennis court lights, saying they have been a problem for years and will prevent community members from using the courts after dark once daylight hours become shorter. She said the courts, which are also used for the growing pickleball community, provide an important sense of community.

Vice Mayor Greg Wright proposed using money from the Roy Davies Fund to pay for the lighting project. City Manager Sean Charpentier said doing so would require a four-fifths vote by the council and would be contingent on the city's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jefferson Union High School District.

Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Commissioner Cindy Abbott also encouraged the council to use the Roy Davies Fund to help pay for restrooms at Fairmont Park, and questioned how the city plans to fund the facility in the future.

Mayor Christine Boles noted that replacing the tennis court lights is a $125,000 project because the fixtures, not just the bulbs, must be replaced. Parks, Beaches and Recreation Director Scott Leslie confirmed that the city is responsible for maintaining the lights under the current MOU. He added that grants or community fundraising could also help support the project.

Councilmember Mayra Espinosa emphasized the importance of improving Fairmont Park, noting that the Roy Davies Fund was established to support parks and that the park is home to the Roy Davies Memorial Playground. She also raised concerns about deteriorating turf in the park that poses a safety hazard to children playing.

The council unanimously approved using $79,110 from the Roy Davies Fund for the Fairmont Park restroom project. Members then voted 4-1 to approve funding for the tennis court lights, contingent on the MOU and remaining budget funds, with Espinosa casting the lone dissenting vote.

Pacifica City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, giving residents an opportunity to comment on local issues. Watch the rest of the meeting at pacificcoast.tv.

Pacifica Council Declares Emergency + Demolition of Chit Chat Cafe

Facing a relentless and rapidly changing coastline, the Pacifica City Council voted unanimously to declare an emergency over severe structural damage at the Pacifica Municipal Pier. As part of the emergency declaration, officials authorized the immediate demolition of the iconic Chit Chat Cafe. The 53-year-old municipal pier and the abutting local eatery sustained severe damage last week following an aggressive barrage of waves and coastal erosion. The resulting cracks and displacement of the concrete walkway left the facility structurally unsafe. Wrecking crews quickly moved to clear the cafe structure, a beloved hub for local fishermen and the coastal community.

While the cafe's demolition was swift, the pier's long-term future remains heavily debated. The City Council heard from emotional residents who urged the city to find a way to save or rebuild the iconic landmark. Finding a path forward will not be cheap. City engineers previously estimated that shoring up the pier would cost around $19 million, a 2023 figure that does not account for the most recent damage. City officials are actively exploring county, state, and federal grants to fund the necessary repairs or a potential total rebuild. You can track future updates or review meeting agendas on Ch. 26 or worldwide @ www.PacificCoast.tv

A structural crack discovered in the concrete walkway has led to the closure of the Pacifica Municipal Pier.

The Pacifica Municipal Pier is a well-known local landmark and popular gathering place for residents and visitors, offering scenic coastal views along the city’s waterfront.

City officials announced the closure after identifying the crack and have restricted public access to the pier. At this time, there is no information available regarding how long the closure will remain in effect.

Community members are encouraged to follow posted closure signs and avoid entering the restricted area while the situation is being evaluated. The closure will remain in place until further notice to help ensure public safety.

2026 Bay Area Yarn Crawl!

Support Local Makers: Pacifica’s Royal Bee Yarn Joins the Bay Area Yarn Crawl

Pacifica’s creative community will have a special reason to celebrate this March as Royal Bee Yarn takes part in the Bay Area Yarn Crawl, happening March 13–22, 2026.

The annual event invites knitters, crocheters, and fiber enthusiasts to explore independent yarn shops across the Bay Area. For Pacifica residents, it’s also a chance to support a beloved local business that has become a hub for creativity and community.

A Creative Hub in Pacifica

Located along Palmetto Avenue, Royal Bee Yarn offers a welcoming space for anyone interested in fiber arts—from longtime knitters to beginners picking up their first skein of yarn.

Inside the shop, visitors will find:

  • A carefully curated selection of high-quality yarns

  • Knitting and crochet tools for all skill levels

  • Project kits and patterns

  • A warm, community-centered environment where makers can connect

Royal Bee Yarn has become known locally not just as a store, but as a gathering place where people share ideas, learn new skills, and celebrate the art of handmade crafts.

What the Bay Area Yarn Crawl Is All About

The Bay Area Yarn Crawl is a 10-day celebration of independent yarn shops across Northern California. Participants visit multiple shops throughout the region, discovering new yarns, meeting fellow makers, and collecting stamps on a bingo-style crawl card.

Completing patterns on the card can earn participants entries into prize drawings filled with yarn, tools, and fiber-related goodies. But for many participants, the real highlight is exploring local yarn shops and meeting the people who keep the craft community thriving.

Why Supporting Local Yarn Shops Matters

Small, independent yarn shops like Royal Bee Yarn play a vital role in keeping fiber arts accessible and vibrant. Unlike large retailers, local yarn stores often provide:

  • Expert advice and personalized help for projects

  • Classes and workshops for new and experienced makers

  • Carefully sourced yarns from independent producers

  • Community spaces where people gather to craft together

Events like the Bay Area Yarn Crawl highlight these businesses and encourage people to shop local while celebrating creativity.

Stop By During the Crawl

If you’re in Pacifica—or exploring the Coastside during the crawl—Royal Bee Yarn is a perfect stop. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next project or simply curious about the world of fiber arts, the shop offers a welcoming place to start.
