Recently, there was a tsunami warning for the coastside of California. Had this been a real tsunami, we thought this would be a good time to create a public service announcement illustrating what to do in the event of a tsunami to help protect our coastside citizens from potential danger:

1. FOLLOW GUIDANCE

Official tsunami warnings are issued through local radio, television, authorities, or the National Weather Service. You may also hear tsunami sirens during a direct emergency. If you encounter any of these signals, evacuate immediately!

However, tsunami warnings can also be natural. Look out for earthquakes, sudden rises in sea level, walls of water approaching the shore, or loud ocean roars, as all of these can be indicators of tsunamis. Even if an official warning has not been released, still evacuate immediately if you encounter any of these natural signs.

2. GET TO HIGHER GROUND

Evacuate to higher ground as quickly as possible. Move inland or to an elevated location that is at least 100 feet above sea level or two miles from the coast, if possible. Avoid roads that may become congested or are near low-lying areas. If you are in a tsunami evacuation zone and an alert has been issued, follow the posted evacuation routes. Always prioritize speed over belongings; take only essentials such as identification, medications, and emergency supplies. If you are in the water during a tsunami, grab onto something that floats, such as a raft or a tree trunk.

3. PROCEED WITH CAUTION

After the tsunami, use caution when returning to coastal areas and do not do so until you receive an "all clear" notice from officials. The coastal infrastructure may be damaged, and there may be flooding, debris, or downed power lines. Avoid driving through flooded areas and watch out for weakened roads or buildings. Help others if you can, but ensure your own safety first. Listen to public health guidance about water safety and sanitation, as tsunami flooding can contaminate water supplies and spread disease.
