The following was written by Michael Letang a student at SFSU who is also currently living in Oakland. PCT holds such an importance for Michael to gain experience and knowledge that he makes a long commute 2 times a week while being remote the other days!
If it had been for Pacific Coast TV taking a chance on me I would still be stuck in a warehouse that neighbors a junkyard. So becoming a member of Pacific Coast TV has been everything I had hoped it would be. As a new intern at Pacific Coast TV, I have been warmly welcomed as a member of the coast side community. Pacific Coast TV has offered me the opportunity to put into the world what I want to see in it. By supporting Pacific Coast TV, you are also supporting your local coastside community. Pacific Co
ast TV supports local businesses and non-profits by filming community events and offering advertising on our channel and website to their direct audience.
Funding for Pacific Coast TV is not ‘non-essential’. Because if you took away PEG stations, like Pacific Coast TV, you would be taking away people’s freedom of speech as well. Pacific Coast TV is not the only PEG station, it is however a historical one. At a PEG station in Kauai, they feature cooking shows, important hearings and information for people,
and it is all produced by people in the local community.
If you take away PEG stations, like Pacific Coast TV, you take away workshops that train people in real-life production skills that without it would not be able to get a job and provide. You would be taking away Pacific Coast TV Programs like The Bruce Latimer Show and Spotlight, made by people and business owners in your community who you may even know personally. You would be taking the opportunity away from the community to volunteer at events like Pelican Fest, Fog Fest and Pumpkin Fest, events that build stronger relationships within the community. I am convinced that taking away Pacific Coast TV is really taking something significant away from not only the community but from you and I as well.
Sincerely,
Michael Letang
