Event Description

Protest to Close the Camps – August 22 at ICE in SF

On August 22 at noon San Mateo county activists will gather outside the San Francisco office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to Close the Camps! We demand that the camps in which thousands of people are being indefinitely held by ICE be closed. We also demand an end to deportations and detentions, and the prompt processing of asylum petitions, according to international law.

This day is part of the Month of Momentum. Every day in August a group of activists will gather in front of the ICE office at 630 Sansome at noon to demand an end to the U.S. government actions that are creating a human rights crisis.

We demand that San Mateo County protect immigrants--

San Mateo County has not yet adopted a strong sanctuary ordinance. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s office reported that from January through October 2018, they turned over 38 people to ICE custody. Although the Sheriff claims these transfers were permitted under the California Values Act (SB 54), cooperation with ICE is not required. Both neighboring counties, San Francisco and Santa Clara, have stronger sanctuary policies.

In May a Daly City resident was arrested by Daly City police and turned over to ICE after a traffic stop. No crime permitting this transfer was alleged, and there was no signed judicial warrant. Lawyers from Asian Americans Advancing Justice managed to prevent his immediate deportation. On August 5 he was let out of detention in Bakersfield, but remains in danger of deportation.
