Melba’s Kitchen is an all-women big band that offers music by Black women musical geniuses. Mildred Owen Concert Hall (“The Hall”). September 12 at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM
Features works by Liston, Williams, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Count Basie, and custom arrangements (including pieces by Mary Watkins). Has played major venues like SFJAZZ Miner Auditorium, Yoshi's in Oakland, The Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and the de Young Museum.
Melba's Kitchen takes a deep dive into the sophisticated and soulful compositions and arrangements of Liston and Williams, jazz giants who accomplished so much, yet were recognized in such a low proportion to what they contributed.
Melba's Kitchen also honors the under-recognized jazz great Melba Liston and her formidable contributions to jazz. Liston had a great big, beautiful sound on the trombone and was a pioneer as a woman in jazz. The band will appear at Pacifica Performances. Featuring swinging compositions and originals, plus a wide-open dance floor.
