Illustrated Talk: The Polynesians — A Journey Across the Pacific

Discover the remarkable story of one of the world’s greatest seafaring civilizations at “Illustrated Talk: The Polynesians,” a special community presentation exploring how the Polynesians populated much of the Pacific Ocean and developed rich, distinctive cultures across its many islands.

This illustrated talk traces the extraordinary navigation skills, cultural traditions, and shared heritage of the Polynesian people — often called the “people of the sea.” Attendees will learn how these early explorers crossed vast ocean distances long before modern navigation tools, and how each island community shaped its own identity while remaining connected through language, tradition, and the ocean itself.

A Local Connection to a Global Story

In addition to exploring Polynesian history across the Pacific, this talk will highlight Pacifica’s unique connection to the ocean and its broader ties to Pacific cultures. The presentation offers an opportunity to reflect on how coastal communities like ours are linked to a much larger maritime history that spans centuries and continents.

Featured Speaker

The talk will be presented by Stephen Johnson, President of the Pacifica Historical Society, whose work focuses on preserving and sharing the stories that connect our local history to the wider world. Through visuals and storytelling, Johnson brings history to life in a way that is accessible, engaging, and meaningful for audiences of all ages.
