The Pacifica City Council officially proclaimed October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during its meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, urging community members to join the effort to eliminate intimate partner violence.
In issuing the proclamation, city leaders highlighted the vital role of Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA), recognizing it as the premier victim advocacy organization serving San Mateo County. The designation comes as CORA marks its 50th year of providing crisis support, shelter, and long-term recovery services to survivors and their families.
The City of Pacifica emphasized that combating domestic violence demands a comprehensive, countywide approach spanning prevention, emergency crisis intervention, safe housing, legal advocacy, and mental health resources.
Over the past five decades, CORA has delivered essential aid through safehouses, therapy sessions, and legal assistance. Alongside direct support services, the non-profit actively focuses on community-wide prevention. CORA's educational outreach reaches more than 6,000 middle and high school students annually with lessons on healthy relationships, while connecting with over 3,000 adults through training programs, presentations, and community events.
