PCT and CORA Highlight Domestic Violence Prevention
By PCT Intern Derek Hamill
The Pacifica City Council officially recognized October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during its meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, urging community members to join the effort to eliminate intimate partner abuse.
In issuing the proclamation, city leaders highlighted the vital role of Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) plays as the premier victim advocacy organization serving San Mateo County. The designation comes as CORA marks its 50th year of providing crisis support, shelter, and long-term recovery services to survivors and their families.
Last year, PCT, also celebrating our 50th year anniversary, sat down with CORA to talk to it's Executive Director, Karen Furguson. She emphasized that combating domestic violence demands a comprehensive, countywide approach—spanning prevention, emergency crisis intervention, safe housing, legal advocacy, and mental health resources. Please see that video above.
Over the past five decades, CORA has delivered essential aid through safehouses, therapy sessions, and legal assistance. Alongside direct support services, the non-profit actively focuses on community-wide prevention. CORA's educational programs reach more than 6,000 middle and high school students annually with lessons on healthy relationships, while connecting with over 3,000 adults through training programs, presentations, and community events. PCT is proud to partner with CORA to provide the program seen above. Please watch and share with someone you love.
If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, CORA’s confidential 24-hour hotline is available at 800-300-1080 for immediate support.
